James began his running career as a freshman in high school after giving up the sought-after title of chief bench-warmer on a scrubby freshman basketball team. After experiencing some high school success in the 1600m, he decided to take his talents to the DIII circuit, competing for Johns Hopkins. While college held many injuries and plateaus, James' breakthrough race came at the 2013 Columbia Final Qualifier, getting outkicked by a 46-year-old man for a 4:17.11 mile. He now works in healthcare consulting in Virginia and looks to lower his 1500 PR and run a respectable 5000.
