Joe Wiegner
Ivyland, Pa. native Joe Wiegner's running career began the last day he played soccer in junior high. He ran cross country and track for Council Rock High School, the dominant force in Pennsylvania cross county in the 1990s, and by the end of his career helped the team win the 1999 state championship with his fourth place individual finish. He also finished a close second in the state track championship mile race before taking his talents to James Madison University and subsequently Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, where he ran for Aaron Russell.
He helped Lock Haven to two consecutive PSAC cross country titles in 2003 and 2004, a regional title and a ninth-place national Division II finish in 2004. That ultimate 2004 race also came with an All-America award for Wiegner, who finished 36th.
After years of bouncing between the DC area and Philadelphia, where he coached his alma mater's high school cross country team, he has settled in the the Georgetown Running Company and gained an acumen for racing longer distances. He yearns to return to the half marathon after a stellar debut race at the 2008 Philadelphia Distance Run and aims to continue his progress from 2010, a year that saw him set personal records in the 5k and 10k."Wiggy" lives in the Twinbrook neighborhood of Rockville, Md. and awaits the day his precious dachshunds can join him in Maryland. He teaches health and physical education to middle school students in Montgomery County, Md. and is currently thinking about the Philadelphia Eagles and rocking out to music by his brother's band Victory in Numbers.
