10k - 32:57 13.1 - 1:12:01 26.2 - 2:33:31 Matt began running while in middle school, although his team's practices consisted primarily of indoor shot put and long jumping into wood chips. He picked the sport back up as a junior at Concordia Lutheran High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana after a back injury forced him out of his first sport, tennis. Matt ran a 2:00 800 meter relay split before graduating, and decided to try out for the Cross Country team at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He made the team by the skin of his teeth and has seldom picked up a tennis racket since.

He was a (non top 7) part of the Division III National Champion Cross Country team his sophomore year, and ran 15:33 for 5k that spring. After that his collegiate career took a turn in the wrong direction, as he battled mono, anemia, and general slowness. After graduating he decided to train for the 2009 Richmond Marathon, where he made a successful marathon debut in 2:36:18. He continues to focus on long road races, and improved his half and full marathon PRs to 1:12:01 and 2:33:31 in 2011. Matt can regularly be found running on the National Mall with the rest of his Capitol Hill Distance Project compatriots.
