Patrick Murphy
Patrick Murphy began his running career in the hills of his upstate New York home in Binghamton. For some reason, Patrick naively thought he was meant to be a soccer player for most of his youth. It was not until training to run a sub-7 minute mile to make the JV soccer team that Patrick realized his passion for running.
After a lack-luster high school campaign, he concluded that he would not run competitively in college. That is, until he was told that the coach of his new alma mater – the legendary Harry Groves of Penn State – was holding a two-mile time trial to walk-on the varsity cross country team. While Patrick did not meet the sub-10 minute threshold or finish in the top 18, Groves decided to give him a shot and see how long he would last. After two years when the only compliment Groves could give was "at least he keeps the team GPA up," Patrick finally had a breakout season in his junior year. Patrick's final three years at Penn State took him across the country racing at some of the nations' most prestigious meets. |

In the spring of 2007, Patrick again thought his competitive racing days were over as he crossed the finish line of the Big Ten Championship Men's 10K on his home track. When Patrick moved to Washington, DC in the fall of 2007, he discovered the Georgetown Running Company and realized, yet again, that his best competitive racing days were still ahead of him. Patrick graduated from Penn State with a Bachelor and a Master of Architectural Engineering, and currently works as a Mechanical/HVAC Engineer for Vanderweil Engineers in Alexandria, VA. Patrick is the Secretary of the Georgetown Running Club.
