Russell started running the summer before his junior year of high school. He intended to continue his soccer career coming fall, but there wasn't a preseason to get in shape, and he decided to accompany his sister to cross country practice. After a few practices he enjoyed the team atmosphere so much that he put soccer and wrestling behind him in order to pursue cross country and track. Although he was running slower than many of the girls on the team throughout his first season, he was able to continuously improve. Russell became the first boy in his high school's history to qualify for the Nevada 4A state cross country meet, and broke the school record in the 2 mile, running 10:10. Russell ran for Southwest Oregon CC in Coos Bay, OR for a year, and then transferred to Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. Russell has run PRs in every event, every year, since he started running, and he intends to keep that streak going with GRC. Russell works as a software engineer for Walmart Labs.
